Victor Hugo was to the French as Shakespeare was to the English, Victor Hugo left France in 1851 for the nearby Channel Islands for an exile in Guernsey that would last 15 years during this time the island played a major part in inspiring many of his important works including the London and Broadway Hit "les Miserables"
Bruce Russell from the Guernseymint was asked by Channel Island and French clients to design and mint a gold and silver coin befitting the great man. The design on the front of the coin depicts in relief his bust and the reverse side of the coin it shows a map of the Channel Islands with the outline of France and England both sides have Victor Hugo's signature and famous quotes he made about the islands, on the front of the coin the French text reads " When liberty returns I shall return" and the reverse side in English " The Channel Islands are fragments of France which fell into the sea and were gathered up by England"
Victor Hugo silver coins are proving very popular with clients wanting small bullion coins in quarter oz sizes. Avaliable in fine silver and fine gold.
