The one double, in a similar vein to the eight double, is unlike most other world coinage that generally features the current head of state. Also it was legal tender and was first minted in 1830. It was released periodically until 1966 together with the Two, Four and Eight Doubles.

The coin also uses the ancient Royal seal of King Edward I given to the island in 1279 which originally bore the three lions of England crowned later to become leopards, surmounted by a branch to represent broom or 'planta genista'. Above the seal was 'Guernesey' in French, the legal and everyday language of the island at that time.
