In 1489 gold was gaining prominence as money in England. King Henry VII instructed the Royal Mint to produce a new gold coin called the Sovereign to be used as circulating gold coinage this came to an end in the reign of James I and did not appear for another again for 200 years this original coin coin was nearly twice the size and weight of modern sovereigns.
British gold sovereigns have a nominal value of one-pound sterling but in practice they are used as a bullion coin linked to the daily gold fix, we sell the coins as mixed years for their gold content rather than any numismatic value they are exempt from capital gains tax in the UK up to £10,600.00 but with the current financial climate taxs laws change frequently.
